Ear pain is a lot harder to diagnose than patients might realize. This is because there is a number of reasons people experience pain in their ears. From an infection to damaged bones to foreign bodies, there are many things a specialist must rule out to determine the cause of ear pain. While there are many causes, ear, nose, and throat specialists see three more often than others.

Common Ear Infection

Medically referred to as Otitis Media, this type of infection is a secondary infection that settles in soon following an upper respiratory infection. A physician will look inside the ear for the telltale signs of this type of infection, which include a red or cloudy membrane.

If you an ear infection, there are some common symptoms you will see including:

  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Intense Ear Pain
  • Dizziness

Sinus Infection

For some, a sinus infection causes severe ear pain without any other symptoms. This is because your sinuses stop draining mucus and begin to block and buildup, leading to pressure. Some individuals experience sinus infections following a cold, while others are prone due to deviated septum or allergies.

Ruptured Ear Drum

Ruptured eardrums occur when a hole or opening occurs in the eardrum. Your eardrum is a thin piece of tissue separating your middle and outer ear. A rupture can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

  • A loud noise that was close to the ear – such as standing near a speaker or a gunshot
  • Rapid change in pressure
  • Foreign objects inside your ear
  • A direct injury to the ear
  • Using cotton swabs and pressing too far into the ear

After a rupture occurs, you are likely to encounter ear pain. But, you may also suffer from minor to severe hearing loss, dizziness, a buzzing sound in your ear, and drainage from the affected ear.
